Surrounding the Museum of Future Inventions is a Board of Visionaries, comprised of people accomplished in their field, inventive, enterprising, representing the creative drive we hope to instill in the people who visit the Museum.

Dr. Ben Bova – The author of more than 115 futuristic novels and nonfiction books, Dr. Ben Bova has been involved in science and high technology since the very beginnings of the space age. President Emeritus of the National Space Society and a past president of Science Fiction Writers of America, Dr. Bova received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation in 2005, “for fueling mankind’s imagination regarding the wonders of outer space.” His 2006 novel TITAN received the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel of the year.

At the Omegacon 2008 science fiction convention, Dr. Bova received the first annual Ben Bova Award “For Outstanding Achievement in Science Fiction Literature.”

Dr. Bova is a frequent commentator on radio and television and a widely-popular lecturer. Earlier, he was an award-winning editor and an executive in the aerospace industry.

Governor Richard D. Lamm is the co-director of the Institute for Public Policy Studies at the University of Denver and the former three-term governor of Colorado. A nationally recognized expert of healthcare issues, Lamm was chairman of the Pew Health Professions Commission and a public member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He is the author of numerous articles on health care that have appeared in such medical publications as The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Health Affairs,Medical Economics, and Public Health Reports. His editorials have appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Newsday, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune.

Margaret “Meg” Walker Hansson is the former president and CEO of Aqualogic Inc., developer of innovative pond water purification systems. She is the founder and former CEO of Gerry Baby Products whose products include the famous Gerry baby carriers. She also founded Blockits, Inc., a company with patents on a new kind of sailboat block, and Genac, Inc., manufacturers of new products for people with disabilities.

John Petersen is considered by numerous influential leaders to be one of the most informed futurists in the country. He is the leading futurist who writes and thinks about high impact surprises–wild cards–that are global in scope, potentially disruptive, and intrinsically out of control.

In 1989 Petersen founded The Arlington Institute, a non-profit, future-oriented research institute. Arlington operates on the premise that effective thinking about the future is impossible without casting a very wide net. The “think tank” serves as a global agent for change by developing new concepts, processes and tools for anticipating the future and translating that knowledge into better present-day decisions.

Dr. Lawrence Farwell is the Chairman & Chief Scientist of Brain Fingerprinting Laboratories Inc.  Brain Fingerprinting is a new scientific method for detecting whether specific information is stored in a person’s brain. Though an extensive R&D process developed the system, full innovation would require proofs. More than just proof of process, these needed to be proofs of confidence.

Farwell holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of Illinois. Recently TIME Magazine named Farwell to the “TIME 100: The Next Wave,” the 100 innovators who may be “the Einsteins and Picassos of the next century.”

Drew Crouch currently serves as Vice President, Strategic Development for Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp.  He has played a key role over the past four years in the growth and success of Ball Aerospace, an innovative provider of space systems.  His current portfolio of responsibilities includes: enterprise strategy development; mergers and acquisitions; public and corporate relations and communications; and information technology.  Drew has served in a variety of technical (interplanetary mission design and spacecraft design), business development, operations, finance and strategy roles in the company during two six year tours of duty.

Drew’s Ball tenure was interrupted by an exciting 3½ year interlude with two internet start-ups and a private equity financier during the mid 90s.  Prior to his first tour at Ball, he was an engineer with several defense and civil engineering contractors.

Drew serves on the Board of Directors of Vexcel Corp., a Boulder, Colorado based remote sensing company and on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Colorado State University College of Engineering.

Wil McCarthy is an aerospace engineer and the author of seven science fiction novels and assorted short fiction and nonfiction. He is a contributing editor at WIRED magazine, the science columnist for the SciFi channel, and the Chief Technology Officer for Galileo Shipyards, an aerospace research corporation.

Paul Dusenbery is the Founder and Director of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Paul has been active in a variety of areas in solar-terrestrial physics and has served on many committees that pertain to research and education. He served on the American Geophysical Union’s Education and Human Resources Committee for two terms, and is currently the chair of the Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA/AGU) Public Information Committee, a member of SPA’s Education Committee, and a member of the Boulder Valley Connect Project Advisory Committee, part of Colorado’s State Systemic Initiative. He is the Project Director for the multi-agency supported museum exhibitions Electric Space & MarsQuest.

Peter Giles was the President and CEO of The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, retiring in March 2005.

Working with The Tech since 1987, Giles spearheaded The Garage, a prototype museum which opened in 1990.  His hard work culminated in the 1998 opening of The Tech’s current Legorreta-designed, downtown San Jose facility.

Under his direction, The Tech has grown into an internationally recognized organization that leverages Silicon Valley technologies to foster the spirit of innovation locally and globally.

Landmark successes include:

  • Over 4 million visitors, 1987 – present; with attendance trending upward in 2004 versus 2003
  • Founding and year-over-year growth of The Tech Museum Awards: Technology Benefiting Humanity, with $1 million in global cash prize disbursements
  • Empowering 1 million educators and youth through teacher training institutes and web-based resources, field trips and community partnerships with area schools and youth groups
  • Development of a signature learning approach, Design in Mind Learning, to provide teacher professional development and curricula throughout the US
  • Engaging 20,000 youth in 17 annual Tech Challenge competitions
  • Tech Endowment fundraising – $14 million to date

Giles serves on the board of the Association of Science Technology Centers, and the Giant Screen Theater Association. He has received the John Gardner Leadership Award from the American Leadership Forum, was recognized as San Jose Citizen of the Year by The Boys and Girls club, and was a fellow of the American Leadership Forum.

Dr. Paul MacCready (September 25, 1925 – August 28, 2007) was the founder and chairman of AeroVironment, Inc. He has been pioneering the use of alternate energy sources in aviation for over 50 years, developing vehicles and devices for both military and commercial use that strike a balance between nature and technology.

Dr. MacCready earned his doctorate in aeronautics at Caltech and began his career flying sailplanes and powered aircraft. He pioneered high altitude wave soaring and in-cloud ventures with sailplanes, winning three National Championships and the International Championship in France. In 1971, he founded AeroVironment, Inc., focusing on aeronautics, the environment and alternate sources of energy. He is known as the “father of human-powered flight,” having won the Kremer Prize for both his Gossamer Condor and Gossamer Albatross. Today, his work focuses on the challenge of combining nature and technology to meet the unique needs of both current and future markets.
