Accidental Inventions

Velcro, microwaves, Teflon, super glue, saccharin, X-rays, and Corn Flakes were all discoveries that were made ‘by accident.’ In fact, accidental inventions represent a surprising amount of innovations that benefit mankind every day. 

But how do they happen? And how do you recognize them when they do?

These questions, along with how to protect your inventions and then bring them to market, are the topic of the evening at the next DaVinci Labs.

We will be hearing from an inventor who has discovered something that will change the way we store energy - affecting every person on earth. We will also hear from his patent attorney as we delve into how this invention is protected by the Patent Office, and how these two men plan on bringing this new product to market.

Patent Attorney for Kilpatrick and Townsend

David Boyd spent 17 years as an engineer and in the legal department with Hewlett-Packard in Colorado, and is comfortable with all technology related product. He is currently a Patent Attorney for Kilpatrick and Townsend of Denver. Mr Boyd is the attorney of record for Mr. Watts, and will be sharing with us the path he's laid out to protect Mr. Watts’ accidental invention, what this path entails, and how other inventors can learn from this process.

Phil Watts has enjoyed a career working at Lawrence Livermore Labs and building medical device products. He is currently in the midst of bringing an accidental invention to market and will share with DaVinci Labs his process for discovering his latest invention, protecting it with patents, and then bringing it to a worldwide market.

Brian Baker created one of the very first web sites in the early 1990’s, and spent the next 10 years working in software, building several of the most visited websites, Fortune 100 enterprise systems, and management software tools. He is responsible for several online technologies we use every day, including how we read our news and how we view online video content. Mr. Baker moved to hardware design in 2003, finding great success with his own consumer electronics startup, selling product at national retail and earning awards and media attention around the world (company sold to a private equity group in 2008).

For the past 3 years Mr. Baker has helped Fortune 500 clients and startups with product discovery/design, marketing, and the manufacturing of consumer electronics and textile products. Mr. Baker has won several awards for user-centric approach to interactive and physical product design; including Forbes 'Best of the Web,' Yahoo's yearly 'User Experience' award, and the DaVinci Institute's own 'Inventor of the Year Award.' Mr. Baker sits on the board of three companies, and loves motorcycling in the Rocky Mountains.
