How to establish yourself as a world renowned expert in your field
Do you consider yourself to be an expert? How many other people think of you as an expert?
Being an expert is not about how you view yourself, but the lens through which others see you. But here’s the most important part. You have direct control of this process.
When someone thinks of you as an expert, they are going through a mental calculation of all of the accomplishments they can associate with your name. Have you gotten a college degree, filed a patent, written a book, started a business, won an award, designed a video game, produced a documentary, managed a fund, or gotten elected to public office?
It’s easy to go through a checklist of accomplishments and rack up some level of notoriety. However, the true expert is far more than a bundle of micro-triumphs. They are a person in motion, never satisfied with what’s already happened, taking risks, and working until the sun comes up in the morning.
There is no fast path to becoming a world renowned expert, but there is a process for making it happen quicker.
- Step One - Take Inventory: Who are you and what have you accomplished?
- Step Two – Get an Objective Opinion: What you think is important many not be the least bit noteworthy to other.
- Step Three – What’s Missing: Much like adrenalin junkies, the real experts are always looking for the next mountain to climb and the next big achievement to sign their name to.
- Step Four – Telling Your Story: The world develops impression of who you are by the way you describe yourself. The photos, videos, and words you use to demonstrate who you are and where you are going are critical.
- Step Five – Living the Life: Experts are never looking for the easy way to do things. They are determined, passionate, well-connected, and finding opportunity in rooms filled with closed doors.
We realize this doesn’t sound easy. The reason you will want to take this specific path is because it is hard. Everyone can do the easy things, but only the truly gifted can becomes tomorrow’s world-class experts.
