Finding the Future with Lights-On Leadership
"Energizing People to Ignite Extraordinary Aliveness and Effectiveness"
No one goes into work saying, “Today, I am going to behave and act in ways that exhaust my energy, and I’m going to do whatever I can to drain the energy of everyone I come in contact with.” Sounds absurd doesn’t it? And yet, that is the net effect of what happens day in and day out in offices everywhere - people go home with their energy and their enthusiasm drained and exhausted, having worked at less than optimal levels.
As a leader, have you ever asked yourself – What is missing here? What can I be doing differently to change this? The primary issues leaders face are about leading people to be more engaged, more inspired, more responsible and more accountable. We continually hear questions, such as: How do I keep my employees motivated and engaged? How do I create a culture of people who are enthusiastic, committed and accountable? How do I attract and keep employees who bring an enthusiastic and responsible attitude to work every day? As a leader, it can be frustrating trying to instill the right instincts into your employees and co-workers to think bigger, take on responsibility, be accountable, and fully work to their potential.
What is missing is knowledge about the impact that human energy has on the individual and the workplace. The phrase “Our human resources are our most important asset” is voiced by business leaders every day. What you can do differently is to recognize that the driver of these human resources is the resource of human energy. Companies are run by human energy – not just their physical energy, but more importantly, their mental, emotional and spiritual energy.
To create and sustain an enthusiastic and engaged workplace, it is critical that every leader and every individual learn to monitor and use their own energetic signals to make choices and decisions about everything that happens throughout their workday. The latest competitive advantage for any successful leader is tapping into everyone’s deepest energy and creating a workplace of peak experiences. Peak experiences lead to peak performances.
As a leader, the process of bringing vision, energy and spirit into an organization begins with you. It all begins with your vision of what you want to create. Without your own vision being deeply and passionately connected to the work you do, it is almost impossible to awaken the passions and productivity of the people you work with. When you learn to monitor what lights you up, what energizes you every day, what gives you reason to get out of bed in the morning, you then have the ability to understand and direct the passions and dreams of your employees and co-workers.
